I came to America very young, from Hamburg, Germany. My visits to Europe allowed me the perfect opportunity to synthesize these two tremendous cultures, through Art, for the last forty years. I am still searching for humanistic forms, depicting the poignant inner realities of us all.

bornJohn J. Habela
Born in Hamburg, Germany, and raised in the USA, John J. Habela is a self-taught artist, sculpture being his chosen medium. Forgoing teaching after graduating from Indiana University in 1972 with a BA in German and English literature, he gained a keen interest in visual forms from innumerable trips to Europe and around the States. With this background of visual forms and literary concepts, he gravitated to sculpture. Brancusi, Henry Moore, David Smith, primitive art, and even Polish folk-carvings were all included in his artistic vocabulary. While running the gamut between the ethereal and the realistic, he creates a dialogue that stimulates the viewers sensibilities and begs the question to be asked,"Who are We?" He remains committed to this concept while residing with his wife, three cats, and Bella the dog in northern Indiana.
